The Devil Incarnate

Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord. (Psalm 10:1-3)

This is not a pleasant story. You may want to skip it and go straight to the prayer below.

As the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) moves to take over these countries, it is leaving trails of bodies — and horror — in its path.

Ronald Lauder (heir to the Estee Lauder cosmetics fortune), writing in The New York Times, has chronicled the rampant evil spewed by ISIS and its evil twin known as Boko Haram towards Christians.

ISIS excels in carnage, ruthlessly targeting Christians, as well as Shiites and Kurds. Children are beheaded, mothers are raped and killed, and fathers are hung.

The Middle East and parts of central Africa are losing entire Christian communities that lived in peace for centuries. The terrorist group Boko Haram has kidnapped and killed hundreds of Christians this year.

These Christians are dying because of their beliefs. They are defenseless, and the world is indifferent to their suffering.

We are not powerless. Our strength is in our Lord. Let us pray Psalm 140.

1Save me, Lord, from evildoers; keep me safe from violent people.

They are always plotting evil, always stirring up quarrels.

Their tongues are like deadly snakes; their words are like a cobra’s poison.

Protect me, Lord, from the power of the wicked; keep me safe from violent people who plot my downfall.

The proud have set a trap for me; they have laid their snares, and along the path they have set traps to catch me.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.” Hear my cry for help, Lord!

My Sovereign Lord, my strong defender, you have protected me in battle.

Lord, don’t give the wicked what they want; don’t let their plots succeed.

Don’t let my enemies be victorious; make their threats against me fall back on them.

10 May red-hot coals fall on them; may they be thrown into a pit and never get out.

11 May those who accuse others falsely not succeed; may evil overtake violent people and destroy them.

12 Lord, I know that you defend the cause of the poor and the rights of the needy.

13 The righteous will praise you indeed; they will live in your presence.

“Cor9:24” Starts Again on September 3rd

As a church, we are all called to be followers of Christ! Too, we’re called to go and make disciples of Christ. Paul writes…

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25 [thus the name “Cor9:24”])

On Wednesday and Sunday nights, Bent Creek Baptist will offer a variety of “small groups” to help you with your “core training.” They are open to everyone regardless of your affiliation with Bent Creek Baptist Church. These classes will connect and encourage you on the journey of discipleship!

Wednesday Night Groups (6:30-8:00)

Answering Hard Questions:

  • “Can we know truth?” “Does God exist?” “Can we trust the Bible?” The world has become a fast-paced race of ideas. How do we engage the many worldviews and questions that challenge our faith?
  • 1 Peter 3:15 says, “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as Holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.”
  • In this class, we’ll explore the worldviews influencing our culture and learn how to engage these with the Gospel in ‘gentleness and respect.’

Beginning Spanish: (NOTE: this class begins on September 17th)

  • If you have ever had a desire to learn Spanish or brush up on your skills, here is your chance!
  • Being able to communicate in another language can open so many new doors to build relationships and share the love of Christ with a whole new people group.
  • You will learn basic-intermediate Spanish skills and have the opportunity to use them in conversational settings. No previous Spanish required! Any age is welcomed!
  • Ready? ¡Vamos!
