The Easter egg tradition may have started as part of the celebration following Lent.
It was traditional to use up the household's eggs before Lent began, as they were forbidden during Lent. If not used up, the eggs might be hard boiled to prevent spoilage. Hiding them was a way to avoid temptation.
Also, the egg is viewed as a symbol of resurrection: while dormant it contains a new life sealed within.
